TPS Tech Tips: Customise your Samsung Home Screen

TPS Tech Tips: Customise your Samsung Home Screen

Most people don’t actively ‘theme’ their phones but they usually change the layout of their home screen. Layout is the way of arranging the apps and widgets on your phone’s screen. Some people like their home screen to be as clean as possible with only little icons visible. Even though we have different preferences, we all believe that the space on our home screen is important.

Here are some ideas for customising your Samsung Home screen’s layout:

Adding Home Screen pages on Samsung

1. Tap and hold on your Home screen to bring up the Home screen manager
2. Swipe left to scroll the screen to the right.
3. Tap the add button. Each + button adds one home screen to your phone.

Removing Home Screen pages on Samsung

1. Tap and hold on your Home screen to bring up the Home screen manager.
2. Hold the page you wish to remove.
3. Drag the page over the Remove button and release.

Toggling the Flipboard’s Briefing screen

One of the features of Samsung is the Flipboard app that houses the ‘Briefing’ screen which shows you the latest information on its news stream. While some people find this helpful, some do not. So, here’s how you can turn it on or off:

1. Swipe right to scroll left.
2. Toggle the Briefing switch to on or off, as you desire.

Changing the grid size in Samsung

Another great idea from Samsung is that they allow you to customise your chosen grid size. If you are an app junkie and require all of your apps to be in the same place, then this is perfect for you. If you enjoy your wallpaper, changing the grid size can help you spread out your icons so you can see more of your chosen background.

1. Tap and hold anywhere on your Home screen to bring up the Home screen manager.
2. Tap on the screen grid option of your choice to preview it:

  • 5×5
  • 4X4
  • 4X5

3. Tap Apply.

1. Tap and hold on your Home screen to bring up Home screen manager view.
2. Tap Widgets.
3. Swipe left to see the available widgets.
4. Tap on the widget you would like to use.
5. Tap and hold the widget option of your choice for your widget.
6. Drag the widget option to the location on the screen where you want it and release.

Removing a Widget on Samsung Galaxy

1. Tap and hold the widget that you want to remove.
2. Drag the widget over the remove button (trash can icon) and release.

Searching for Widgets on Samsung Galaxy

1. Tap and hold on your Home screen to bring up Home screen manager view.
2. Tap Widgets.
3. Tap more in the upper right corner.
4. Tap Search widgets.
5. Type the name or category of the widget that you are looking for.
6. Tap the widget to view its options.
7. Once you find the widget you want to use, drag it to the space where you want it to be placed

TPS Tech Tips: Emergency SOS

TPS Tech Tips: Emergency SOS

Wherever you are in the world you can have access to emergency service numbers for the police, ambulance and fire fighters. As countries have a different set of call numbers for emergency services, it can be difficult to remember them at times of need. Fortunately, there is now a shortcut on your iPhone to make things a lot easier!

For iPhone users, you might be familiar with the Emergency SOS button on your mobile phone. It is a feature that allows you to alert the authorities by just a simple button configuration. We seriously hope that you never have to use it, but in case the need arises, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to activate it:

A. iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X

For the latest models of iPhone, the Emergency SOS is already set up. To activate, follow these steps:

1. Press and hold the Power button and the volume down button on the sides of your iPhone. Hold it for a few seconds until you see the red slider.
2. For some, there is a countdown but if you are in dire need, just swipe right on the Emergency SOS slider.

B. iPhone 7 and older

For older models, there is a slight difference in how you can activate the Emergency SOS button. Here’s how:

1. Press the Power button five consecutive times.
2. Swipe right on the Emergency SOS slider.

Activating the Emergency SOS button is easy but what if you accidentally trigger it? Is there a way to actually stop the call? Don’t worry! You can actually cancel the call if you have activated it by mistake. All you have to do is to tap on the Stop button. After pressing, you will receive a prompt asking for a confirmation to stop the call.

To check if your Emergency SOS is enabled, go to Settings, click General then select Emergency SOS. Check if Click Sleep/Wake to Auto Call is enabled. You can also see another setting which will make your phone produce audible sound as it counts down. You can choose to disable this, however, if you want to discretely call in situations when being silent is warranted, such as a mugging.

How to Add Emergency Contacts:
The great thing about iPhone’s Emergency SOS feature is that it helps you find the local emergency services number by triangulating your current location. However, if you also want to alert members of your family or your friends when you are in an emergency, you have to designate them yourself. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Launch your iPhone’s Health app.
2. Press the Medical ID tab
3. Press Edit Medical ID.
4. Under the Emergency Contacts press Add emergency contact.
5. Select a contact.
6. Select a Relationship.
7. Repeat the process until all your emergency contacts have been added

These are just some of the ways your iPhone device can help you in times of emergency. This is why you have to take good care of your device. If you notice any defect or malfunction, it is recommended that you take it to a phone repair shop that will do the work for you.

Difference Between Original Vs Copy iPhone LCD Screen

When customers visit a shop for a screen repair, some shops will give them an option to choose between an original screen and a ‘copy’ screen. Most of the time, the first question that a customer asks is “What’s the difference between the two?” Originals are manufactured for Apple while copy screens are only compatible replacements that are manufactured by third party companies. Most of the time, customers choose the relatively affordable copy rather than the original because of the price distinction, but original iPhone screens are still recommended because of its far higher quality.

In this article, we will be sharing our knowledge of copy screens and how different they are from original iPhone screens.

1. Digitizer and Touch Problems

One of the most noticeable differences between an original and a copy is how the touch sensor also called the digitizer is designed. Original Apple screens manufacture digitizers as part of the LCD while copy screens manufacture it on the glass.

There are some companies that manufacture bare LCDs themselves, but these LCDs are also bought by other companies, who in turn add the other parts to create a complete working screen. Because of this, it is possible that you get a great LCD screen, but the digitizer is poor quality.

For iPhone 6, 6s and 6s+, iPhones transferred the chips necessary for the digitizer to work directly on the LCD, that means that when you buy a ‘copy screen’ for these models, you are not only getting a copy of the screen but a copy of the chip.

2. Low Quality LCD Panels

When you buy a copy screen you are also buying a low image quality for your phone. This is because the LCD is of poor quality. The problems experienced are weak brightness, contrast and vibrancy, grainy appearance because of low image resolution and lower refresh rate.

3. Mismatched Parts

In most cases, the performance specification of copy screens is not identical to the original ones. As a result, the battery of the phone drains faster and the OS or operating system is misled. This mismatch is also a possible cause of damage to your backlight.

4. Problems with the Fingerprint ID reader

Copy screens can also create damage to your phone’s touch ID fingerprint reader. The home button flexes on the copy screens design which makes it stop working, and we all know the struggle of not having a working ID fingerprint reader.

Some shops offer copy screens to remain competitive in the market since the difference in price ranges to £20-30. Still, you can get the most of your money with the original for having a better performing iPhone screen. Even though there are different qualities of copy screens, from good copies that actually work to cheaply made ones, there are several factors at play to have your iPhone be used seamlessly. Aside from the points above, one of the factors that might affect the use of your phone with a copy is the Apple updates that conflict with the low grade copy screens.

Eventually, it is your decision whether to choose an original one or not. But additional pounds for an original screen is a good investment. You can avoid all the possible damage caused by copy screens which in turn will help you save money in the long run since you won’t need to return to a shop for further repairs.
